The fabric used to trim the edges of Tatami-mats. Since ancient times, Tatami-beri was reserved exclusively for the nobility, and its colors and patterns were used to symbolize one’s high social status.
The Tokyo Olympic emblem was also designed with the checkered pattern in mind.
Because the pattern continues uninterrupted, it embodies a wish for “prosperity.”
